Once upon a time...
There was this dude who owned the best drum company in the world. He bought a bunch of percussion brands owned by Fender (boo.... hisssss!!!!), and mixed up in the middle of those brands was a little company called Ovation Guitars. Try as they might, Fender couldn't kill the 'little guitar company that could', and when this drum dude saw he had a viable product, a factory to build it, and an extremely loyal customer base, he resurrected what Fender had tried to kill. The drum dude went crazy and put out all kinds of new models, both USA and imports, holding true to the roundback vision of old, it was an incredible resurrection, rivaled only by the LEGENDary Lazarus himself. Once he accomplished this feat, he reflected... For many years his company had built things out of wood... MAPLE mostly. He wanted to build a MAPLE guitar, just like the maple shells his marvelous drums were made from. The old factory wasn't setup for such a thing, so they partnered with a neighbor in California to build a run of 25 exclusive ALL WOOD guitars, specifically with maple backs and sides.
The guitars received mixed reviews. Negative critics were not discussing it's sound or build, but the fact that it wasn't a true roundback Ovation. People that embraced it, loved it. The look and sound of these instruments are fantastic, especially for the price they were offered. They sold out fast. We bought 3 of the 25 originally, should have bought more because they were gone fast.
If you're still reading this, here's why we're composing the short story...
Prior to the announcement of these models, 4 prototypes were made in October of 2018. The first 2 were an 'Elite' style with the multi sound hole design, the second 2 were a center hole design with a fingerboard done in a 'Legend' style. The Elite has the original 'Californian' label (later changed to Edge). The Legends only have the neck block stamp, no label. These guitars have never been seen buy the public... until now.
#1 Elite remains with DW. #2 remains with us. #3 Legend style also stays here. So we have only one of these prototypes available for the public, #4 in the Legend styling.
In addition to these prototypes, there were 3 of the 25 marked as 'B Stock'. Numbers 12, 20, and 22 each have a tiny nick in the headstock.
From Ovation's site:
High-quality, hand-selected tone woods are the foundation of any finely crafted acoustic instrument. This is a shared commonality among storied acoustic guitar and drum makers. When Ovation joined the Drum Workshop family of brands, a new era for the legacy brand was created. Both award-winning companies are focused on supplying the music world with a reliable, player friendly instrument that is both versatile and sonically distinctive. To that end, Ovation created the all-wood Edge California SR1. This superb guitar is expertly hand-crafted in California and includes a solid Moon Spruce top and stunning solid European flamed maple back and sides. Ovation’s trademark headstock and multi-port, Elite sound hole design complete this striking all-wood model, the first ever from Ovation. Only 25 numbered guitars will be produced and sold worldwide.
